Is shrimp and seafood halal in every school?
The sea is one of the clearest places where the schools differ. Fish is agreed upon; shrimp, crab and molluscs are not. Tayib shows your school's position and does not decide for you.
Below are the app's encyclopedia entries exactly as Tayib shows them: the four schools' reading, the explanation, the texts and the sources. Tayib informs, it does not certify — for your personal situation, ask a qualified scholar.
Is shrimp and seafood halal in every school?
Prawns and shrimp: the schools differ in Tayib (Hanafi — doubtful, Maliki — halal, Shafi‘i — halal, Hanbali — halal). Prawns and shrimp are permitted in the Maliki, Shafi‘i and Hanbali readings adopted here. For the Hanafi choice or with no preference, Tayib displays ‘needs checking’ until the opinion followed is validated; this does not mean that all Hanafis forbid them.

Hanafi opinions need to be distinguished
Prawns and shrimp are permitted in the Maliki, Shafi‘i and Hanbali readings adopted here. For the Hanafi choice or with no preference, Tayib displays ‘needs checking’ until the opinion followed is validated; this does not mean that all Hanafis forbid them.
Crab, lobster and other crustaceans
forbidden among Hanafis
Hanafis permit only fish from the sea; the other three schools permit almost all marine animals (Qur’an 5:96). Only prawns and shrimp are debated among them; crab, lobster, langoustine and crayfish are forbidden among Hanafis.
Molluscs
forbidden among Hanafis
Hanafis permit only fish from the sea; the other three schools permit almost all marine animals (Qur’an 5:96).

Hadith
« Narrated AbuHurayrah: A man asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): Messenger of Allah, we travel on the sea and take a small quantity of water with us. If we use this for ablution, we would suffer from thirst. Can we perform ablution with sea water? The Messenger (ﷺ) replied: Its water is pure and what dies in it is lawful food. »

« الجمبري حلالٌ عند جميع الفقهاء، ومنهم السادة الحنفية ، والصحيح أنه لا خلاف في ذلك عندهم »

Crab halal if not harmful
Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) – Komisi Fatwa
Crab is lawful to eat as long as it does not harm health (a fatwa on crab, not specifically on prawns and shrimp).
« Kepiting adalah halal dikonsumsi sepanjang tidak menimbulkan bahaya bagi kesehatan manusia. »
Fatwa MUI tentang Kepiting, 15 June 2002
Differing opinions; abstention more cautious
Darul Uloom Trinidad & Tobago
Hanafis differ according to whether prawns and shrimp are fish or not; the question does not warrant strictness, but abstaining is more cautious (citing Mufti Taqi Usmani).
« However, refraining from consuming it is more cautious, better and more proper/correct. »
Mufti Waseem Khan, 24 December 2019 (published 19 June 2020)
Best avoided, but tolerated
Darul Uloom Deoband – Darul Ifta (India), via IslamQA.org mirror
Scholars differ over prawns and shrimp; Deoband recommends avoiding them while considering eating them admissible.
« According to us, one should avoid eating it, but if anyone eats then it is allowable for him. »

The sea according to the schools
Fish, prawns, shrimp and seafood
The Qur’an makes sea game lawful, and the Prophet ﷺ said of the sea that its water is purifying and its dead animals lawful.

The difference of opinion
The Maliki, Shafi‘i and Hanbali schools permit almost all marine animals (with exceptions for some amphibious animals depending on the school). The Hanafi school permits only what is considered fish: prawns and shrimp are debated, and molluscs (squid, mussels, oysters) are forbidden. This is why Tayib asks for your school.

What people often ask
Some Hanafi authorities permit prawns and shrimp, while other reported opinions reject them according to their classification. Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta adopts permission; Darul Uloom Trinidad and Deoband report an internal difference of opinion. Tayib does not reduce these positions to a single ‘halal but makruh’ and leaves the Hanafi choice to be validated.
