Halal biscuits: emulsifiers, whey, flavourings
A biscuit looks simple: flour, sugar, butter. But the list often hides an emulsifier, whey or a flavouring whose origin matters. Tayib reads them one by one and ranks the aisle in its 'Top halal'.
Below are the ingredients Tayib checks in this aisle, with the four schools' reading taken from the app. In the app, Top halal ranks the aisle's halal products by Tayib score. Tayib informs, it does not certify.
Halal biscuits: emulsifiers, whey, flavourings
Mono- and diglycerides (E471): "doubtful" for all four schools in Tayib (possible animal origin). An emulsifier made from plant or animal fats. The label rarely specifies which: doubtful until plant origin is indicated.

What Tayib checksMono- and diglycerides (E471)
possible animal origin
An emulsifier made from plant or animal fats. The label rarely specifies which: doubtful until plant origin is indicated.
Esters of mono- and diglycerides (E472)
possible animal origin
An emulsifier made from plant or animal fats. The label rarely specifies which: doubtful until plant origin is indicated.
Whey
depends on the rennet
Whey is a by-product of cheese: it inherits the question of rennet. Animal rennet comes from the stomach of young ruminants, such as calves. If the animal is not ritually slaughtered, Abu Hanifa considers it pure; the other schools consider it doubtful. Microbial or plant rennet resolves the question.
Glycerine (E422)
possible animal origin
Glycerine may come from plant or animal fats, or be synthetic. Doubtful without further information.
L-cysteine / cystine (E920, E921)
feathers, hair or fermentation
L-cysteine is extracted from feathers or hair (sometimes from pigs), or produced through fermentation.
Alcohol flavouring
may contain alcohol
A flavouring named after an alcoholic drink other than wine: it may contain the alcohol itself or merely imitate its taste. Contemporary opinions differ and set conditions. MUIS permits a flavouring solvent not derived from khamr, with at most 0.5% in the flavouring and 0.1% in the finished product. Without established origin, use and amount, Tayib leaves this point to be checked in all schools.
Flavouring of unspecified composition
composition unspecified
In the absence of any indication of animal origin or alcohol, Tayib applies the presumption of lawfulness to generic flavourings, in accordance with the owner’s decision, which is to be reviewed by a knowledgeable scholar. The wording ‘composition unspecified’ is informative: it asserts neither alcohol nor animal material. Flavourings named after pork or an alcoholic drink, and explicitly declared constituents, remain subject to separate treatment. This policy does not depend on the school or preferences.

Additives and emulsifiers
E471, E120, E441… what you need to know
The same E number can refer to a plant, animal or synthetic product: the code alone does not indicate origin. This is why many additives are classified as ‘doubtful’ when the label gives no further information.
A plant origin explicitly attached to the additive may resolve the question of its origin. Tayib also uses certain vegetarian or vegan declarations in the product record for ingredients to which they are relevant. These are declared details: they prove neither the absence of alcohol nor compliance with all religious conditions, and do not permit an explicitly forbidden ingredient.
Carmine
Carmine (E120) is a red colouring extracted from cochineal, an insect. The Maliki permission regarding insects includes conditions whose application to the industrial production of carmine must be checked. Some contemporary institutions permit carmine under their conditions, while others reject it; Tayib presents these opinions separately. Rules concerning insects also include exceptions, notably locusts.

“Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written [i.e., described] in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins upon them what is right and prohibits them from what is wrong and makes lawful for them what is good and forbids them from what is evil and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them. So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him - it is those who will be the successful.”

What people often ask
Whey follows the rennet used to make the cheese: lawful according to the Hanafi opinion, doubtful for the other schools until the rennet’s origin is known.
